Microsoft & Activision Takes Control of the Gaming Industry.
In the Wonderful World of Tech there are approximately 3 billion users that actively play games. What do you expect? Today’s generation are eluded into this era of Interactive Entertainment. In this present time, Gaming is the largest and fastest growing form of entertainment.
With that being said, the Wonderful World of Gaming JUST GOT BIGGER. On January 18, 2022, Microsoft made the world aware of plans to acquire Activision Blizzard Inc.
Activision is one of the biggest leaders in game development and interactive entertainment. Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision will accelerate elusive growth in their gaming business across mobile, PC, console, and cloud gaming. This new page will also provide the necessary building blocks for Microsoft to immerse effectively into the metaverse, a union of online and virtual reality.
Last summer, Activision was covered with accusations that their senior executive team ignored sexual harassment and discrimination going on in the atmosphere of the company. This controversy eventually swallowed Bobby Kotick, Activision’s CEO.
With the company facing pressure from all sides and their stock dropping heavily in December, Microsoft saw a promising time to hit CEO Kotick with a nice bid. Kotick waived the offer, but with second thoughts told Microsoft to come back with a better offer. And knowing Microsoft, they definitely did.
Microsoft is projected to purchase Activision for $95 a share, this equals out to a value of $68.7 Billion. Almost instantly, adding Activision and its approximate 400 million monthly users, will bolster Microsoft’s position in the exponentially growing game business as it competes against Sony and rising giants such as Amazon and Apple. When the transaction closes, Microsoft will be the third largest gaming company in the world coming in right behind Tencent and Sony.
The planned acquisition includes iconic franchises from the Activision, Blizzard and King studios such as Call of Duty, Diablo, Overwatch, Warcraft, and Candy Crush, in addition to global eSports activities through Major League Gaming. The company has studios all around the world hosting nearly 10,000 employees.
With some gamers being unhappy with Activision in recent years, there is new hope that this deal will reverse the decline in quality of the takeover target’s games. “Gaming is the most dynamic and exciting category in entertainment across all platforms today and will play a key role in the development of metaverse platforms,” said Satya Nadella, chairman and CEO, Microsoft. “We’re investing deeply in world-class content, community and the cloud to usher in a new era of gaming that puts players and creators first and makes gaming safe, inclusive and accessible to all.”
Bobby Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, said: “For more than 30 years, our incredibly talented teams have created some of the most successful games. The combination of Activision Blizzard’s world-class talent and extraordinary franchises with Microsoft’s technology, distribution, access to talent, ambitious vision and shared commitment to gaming and inclusion will help ensure our continued success in an increasingly competitive industry.”
Mobile is now considered the largest pool in gaming, nearly 95% of all the players in the world enjoy their games on mobile. Microsoft and Activision Blizzard will indeed empower players to enjoy some of the most immersive franchises, like “Halo” and “Warcraft” just about anywhere.
This Activision acquisition will also grow the Game Pass portfolio at Microsoft with plans to launch Activision Blizzard games onto Game Pass, which has surpassed an epic milestone of 25 million subscribers. With Activision in the balance, nearly 400 million monthly active players will help Game Pass become one of the most diverse and promising lineups of gaming content in the gaming industry.
I personally love the Microsoft and Xbox platform, and I also love the game lineup of Activision Blizzard. I believe that this integration will be prestigious and promising to true gamers such as myself and the other 400 million active users around the globe.
