Google Pixel 4 vs Google Pixel 3: Should you upgrade?
As you all may know, the Google Pixel 4 has been launched and is now available for purchase. But the remaining question is ... should you upgrade? Sure the Google Pixel 4 will offer a solid round of features, but is it worth it to upgrade or should you stay with the Google Pixel 3? Lets find out now...
Google Pixel 4 vs Google Pixel 3 Design & Display
So let's talk about the comparison in display and overall design. The Google Pixel 4 has a 5.7-inch display and the Google Pixel 3 has a 5.5-inch display. You would think that the Pixel 4 has already won ... buuuttt ... if you take a look at the sizes of the Pixel XL lineup, you will see that the Pixel 4 XL has a 6.1-inch display opposed to the Pixel 3 XL having a 6.3-inch display.
That is a bit of a fire starter. Both lineups want to declare victory! Okay then lets dig into some more features.
Both the Google Pixel 3 and the Google Pixel 4 have OLED displays, even though I think they should have AMOLED, but one difference that I must note is that the Pixel 4 has a refresh rate of 90Hz. This helps the utilization of the phone run a bit smoother which is always a plus.
Outside of that, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 4 look very similar in design, well at least from the front. On the back we have the Pixel 3 showing us a single rear camera, while the Pixel 4 shows off with TWO. And to add even more damage, the Pixel 4 wasn't satisfied with having two cameras; the Pixel 4 shows off a whole new design element with the camera system being embedded into a ... square? (Kinda reminds me of the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max square camera shape.)
But lets continue ... So as we talk about the cameras; the camera from the Google Pixel 3 was identified as one of the best smartphone cameras. With a 12.2 megapixel camera, the pictures taken from this smartphone were truly stunning. And now it gets better with the Google Pixel 4, because while they keep that same camera from before, they also add a 16 megapixel telephoto lens. This enables you to have better zoom functionality for your pictures AND better pictures in portrait mode.
Now even though the Pixel 4 improves with the extra rear camera, it takes a step back with the front facing camera. Last year the Pixel 3 gave us an option of using two different front facing cameras, but this year the Pixel 4 only has one. Not sure what to say about that, but when it comes to the 'Wonderful World of Tech', we all know that the more tech the better.
Google Pixel 4 vs Google Pixel 3 Battery & Specs
As we move on to evaluate the battery life of the Pixel 3, you will see that the Pixel 3 has a bigger battery than the Pixel 4. The Google Pixel 3 has a 2915 mAh battery, while the Pixel 4 offers a 2800 mAh battery.
This seems like a little bit of a let down, but it gets more confusing when we take note of how the Google Pixel 4 XL has a bigger 3700 mAh battery opposed to the smaller 3400 mAh batter of the Google Pixel 3 XL.
The bigger battery for the XL model is a plus, but Google what's up with the mismatched feature upgrades? I mean this is the third feature where the regular Google Pixel 3 won over the 4, but the Pixel 4 XL had a better upgrade with the same feature. In my opinion if one of your future line-ups have better features than the previous version, so should all of your future line-ups. But that's just me I guess.
Anyways moving on ..... The Google Pixel 4 wins in terms of processing power since it is sporting a fancy Snapdragon 855 chipset. This would obviously out perform the Google Pixel 3's Snapdragon 845 chipset because it will be more powerful in regards to gaming and multitasking. And to add an extra boost, the Pixel 4 now has 6GB of RAM while the older version had 4GB of RAM.
One more thing that I like is that the Google Pixel 4 gets to experience the return of the Active Edges. With Active edge, you can squeeze your phone to summon your personal Google Assistant. That's something I believe the Pixel 3 didn't have .... Its like I said, the more tech the better!
Google Pixel 4 vs Google Pixel 3 Battery & Specs
The price of a phone is always one of the biggest things people are concerned with, when trying to decide on getting a new phone. So this is going to be a key factor in whether you should upgrade to the Pixel 4.
When the Google Pixel 3 was released, the starting price was $799 / £739 / AU$1,199 for the 64GB and $899 / £839 / AU$1,349 for the 128GB.
The Google Pixel 3 XL was released with a price of $899 / £869 / AU$1,139 for the 64GB and $999 / £969 / AU$1,499 for the 128GB option.
As far as the Google Pixel 4 goes, we see that they released with a price of $799 / £669 / AU$1,049 for 64GB and $899 / £769 / AU$1,199 for the 128GB.
And the Pixel 4 XL goes for $899 / £829 / AU$1,279 for 64GB and $999 / £929 / AU$1,429 for the 128GB option.
So for the US, the prices for both generations turns out to be equal on release date, but other regions of the world are offering the Pixel 4 at lower prices.
After going over all the details, it is obvious that the Google Pixel 4 does bring some spicy new features to the table. But at the same time, we can see it taking a few steps backward in things such as the smaller battery and the single front facing camera.
However It still has some improved camera features and a few added abilities we didn't touch on, such as having 'Motion Sense' and coming with built-in Android 10. So inevitably, the Pixel 4 can still be considered a meaningful upgrade. Annnnddd at the same time you won't be hated for wanting to keep the Pixel 3 a while longer. Or purchasing it if you never had it.
If we take a look over at the XL sizes, I believe the Google Pixel 4 XL definitely packs a hard punch towards the Pixel 3 XL. With all of the extra features AND being cheaper on release date, I think that the Google Pixel 4 XL is definitely the better option!
